Panel Discussion “New Normal: Art in Transition”

Contemporary art in Malaysia has always been about challenging conventions – from political cartoonists Ahmad Fuad Osman’s exhibition being taken down to narratives on history and construction of identity, there has been a strong base for contemporary portrayal locally.

This 15 August, join panelistsĀ Prof. Abdul Rahim Said, Founding Coach and Mentor of Young Art Entrepreneurs National Art Gallery Malaysia,Ā Peisy Ting, contemporary abstract artist andĀ Dr. Tong Gin Chee, co-founder of ZHAN ART | Space, as they discuss what’s next for contemporary art in Malaysia, freedom of expression and what it means under the ā€˜new normal’ for artists in transition. Sharmilla Ganesan, host and presenter of BFM89.9’s art show ā€˜The Front Row’ will moderate the session.

The panel titled ā€˜Making Sense of the ā€˜New Normal’: Art in Transition’ serves as a prelude to contemporary abstract artist Peisy Ting’s first solo show, Transcendence – A Visual Exploration of Self.

The two complementary events support ZHAN Art | Space’s intention to re-evaluate the notion of an artist’s intent in contemporary art post-pandemic and identify what’s distinctive, varied and insular about our art scene in Malaysia and how we can shine a spotlight on these areas.
