Escapism 2.0 is the first solo showcase by Jingxi Lau also known as Jinx, a self-taught artist who first found solace in painting during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Through Escapism 2.0, Jinx explores the tension between feeling physically anchored in the everyday mundane while mentally escaping to places she can never go to in real life by creating works that resemble dreamscapes and magical portals.
As a Malaysian who spent significant time in the United States, Jinx has long navigated a sense of cultural dislocation, feeling that she belonged fully to neither place. Art became her refuge – a way to create her own world through vibrant, colourful acrylics. These imagined realms offered her a means of escape from the daily grind, whether it was coping with lockdown constraints, readjusting to life in Malaysia, or managing the pressures of a fast-paced full-time career in digital marketing. For her, painting has become not just a creative outlet but a sanctuary from lifeβs relentless demands.
Jinx first explored a collection of works painted on CDs and vinyl records but has since moved on to larger bodies of work on canvas that embody her growth and journey as an artist.
Through this showcase, Jinx invites us to explore the diverse paths of escape from the monotony of daily life. Drawing from pop culture and contemporary art, her canvases aim to reflect extraordinary worlds filled with wonder and whimsicality. She encourages the viewers to pause, reflect on their own lives, and consider how moments of imagination can offer relief, insight, and inspiration amidst lifeβs challenges.
